Who Are We?

            Perspective 

Imagine we live in two worlds. Imagine the first world is a large urban centre, let’s use Toronto as an example. In this world, fresh fish for supper means whatever was listed as fresh at the supermarket seafood section or advertised as “Catch of the day” on the restaurant menu. Your meat and other food are processed, injected with chemicals and packaged. The smells around you consist of exhaust fumes, mostly diesel fumes from the transit buses, what you hear is the sound of horns blaring from frustrated drivers. Your view of the sky is largely obscured by the high rises and what you can see of it is through the smog. Night time is determined by your watch, not the stars. Those you can’t see due to the ambient light of streetlights  and other city lighting. These large urban centres try to capture a bit of nature with parks and green spaces. They are antiseptic and unnatural. The trees are pruned, leaves picked up and ponds or small lakes are manmade and devoid of life.

Now imagine the second world where fresh fish means whatever you yourself caught in the last few hours and cooked over an open fire. You have the ability to harvest wild rice, you recognize what is edible in the forest such as mushrooms. You probably have a vegetable garden because  you have the space to do it. The smells around you are that of the campfire, the wild flowers of the forest and the sweet musky smell of decaying undergrowth. You hear only the birds singing, crickets and probably a loon out on the lake. Daytime shows us a clear view of the sky with the only obstruction being the towering pine trees. Night time reveals that same sky filled with stars.

Now you tell me what world you’d prefer to live in, what world needs preserving, what world we want our children and our children’s children to experience.
